On the day of the matchup between the UTSA Roadrunners and the Navy Midshipmen, the Alamodome in San Antonio was filled with 23,000 spectators attending a Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. The atmosphere was set for a celebration of military service, but that mood would quickly shift.

As part of the festivities, a service member from Nellis Air Force Base participated in a rappelling demonstration from the stadium’s ceiling. The Alamodome’s roof stands at a height of 52 meters, providing a dramatic backdrop for the display.
During the demonstration, the descent took a catastrophic turn and the service member fell from the ceiling while rappelling.
UTSA Coach Jeff Traylor, witnessing the change in the stadium’s energy, remarked, "You could tell the energy was just gone.
Immediate medical attention was rendered on the field, and the injured service member was transported to a local hospital for further care. In the wake of the fall, the game was delayed for approximately 10 minutes as emergency personnel attended to the situation.
UTSA Coach Jeff Traylor, witnessing the change in the stadium’s energy, remarked, "You could tell the energy was just gone. It just really puts things in perspective. It really does."
For those in attendance, the event ceased to be about the forthcoming competition and became a collective moment of shock, a stark reminder of the risks inherent in the very service being honored.
Following the incident, UTSA issued a statement expressing its thoughts and prayers for the service member. The Air Force later confirmed the death of the individual and initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the fall.
The Air Force’s investigation seeks to determine exactly what went wrong during the rappelling demonstration. As the inquiry proceeds, the community continues to grapple with the loss of a service member who fell while performing a display meant to honor his peers.
