A Quiet Morning Turns Into Chaos

On October 17, 2026, the routine of a Bend, Oregon, elementary school was shattered when Griffin J. John II, a 16‑year‑old former special‑needs student, entered a locked classroom and unleashed a torrent of fire. The First Witnesses React

Among the startled crowd was a 36‑year‑old father who had two children enrolled at the school. He described hearing the initial gunfire and seeing the chaos unfold. Acting on instinct, he retrieved his legally secured pistol and pursued the shooter into the building. Chief Mike Krantz later confirmed the father “entered the school and found the 16‑year‑old struggling with another teacher before firing multiple rounds at the teen, killing him.”

A Teacher’s Courageous Stand

The other hero of the moment was a teacher who, according to Chief Krantz, “threw her phone at the suspect, tackled him and fought to take his shotgun from him.” While the teacher escaped physical injury, Krantz emphasized that her actions “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.” The teacher’s identity was not disclosed, but her quick thinking turned a deadly encounter into a survivable one for the remaining students.

Police secured the scene, collecting evidence and beginning a forensic review of the weapon and its acquisition.

The Aftermath Inside the Classroom

When the gunfire ceased, the classroom bore the grim tally of four lives lost: three children and the teacher who had been teaching that day. The shotgun, now empty of the 15 rounds fired, still contained 44 rounds, underscoring how much more devastation could have occurred. Police secured the scene, collecting evidence and beginning a forensic review of the weapon and its acquisition.
