A Scientific Partnership in the Pilbara

In the vast, resource-rich expanse of Western Australia's Pilbara region, a quiet collaboration is unfolding that could reshape the future of manganese exploration. Accelerate Resources, an Australian mineral exploration firm, has joined forces with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to conduct a detailed metallurgical study of its manganese deposits. This partnership, backed by a $50,000 Kick-Start research grant, represents a significant step forward in understanding the complex mineralization that lies beneath the Pilbara's ancient landscape.

The Challenge of Manganese

Manganese, a critical component in steel production and increasingly important in battery technology, presents unique processing challenges. Different types of manganese mineralization respond differently to processing methods, making it essential for mining companies to understand exactly what they're working with. For Accelerate Resources, which holds the Woodie Woodie North manganese project, this understanding is fundamental to developing an effective processing route.

Met with Dr. Gareth Kennedy, Research Director, CSIRO Mineral Resources, in Sydney today. We discussed CSIRO’s (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) longstanding partnership with India’s mining PSUs and research institutions. Invited CSIRO to deepen collaboration in India’s critical minerals sector, in line with the @narendramodi Government’s resolve to accelerate the sector’s growth through the National Critical Mineral Mission. @MinesMinIndia @CoalMinistry @MEAIndia @cgisydney @HCICanberra

Accessing World-Class Expertise

The collaboration with CSIRO gives Accelerate Resources access to capabilities that would be difficult for a company of its size to access independently. As Luke Meter of Accelerate Resources explains, "CSIRO brings world class mineral characterisation capability that would be very difficult for a company of our size to access on this scale. Understanding how the different manganese ore types at Area 42 behave is fundamental to designing the right processing route."

This will be followed by more detailed petrographic and microanalytical work to understand the mineral's behavior at a microscopic level.

The Science Behind the Study

Led by CSIRO's Dr. Yoram Teitler, the scientific study will analyze 150 meters of large-diameter diamond core from the Dale's Patch and Nathan's Flat prospects. This core sample provides a vertical cross-section of the mineralization, allowing researchers to understand how the manganese distribution changes with depth. The study will proceed in two stages: first, XRF/hyperspectral scanning and hardness measurements will provide initial data on the mineral composition and physical properties. This will be followed by more detailed petrographic and microanalytical work to understand the mineral's behavior at a microscopic level.

The Significance of the Findings

The results of this study will have direct implications for how Accelerate Resources approaches its Woodie Woodie North project. By understanding the mineralization behavior, the company can refine its processing routes and enhance its resource evaluation. As Meter notes, "CSIRO brings world class mineral characterisation capability to understand how the different manganese ore types behave and give us a much sharper picture of the upgrade potential."

A Methodical Approach

The study begins on November 2, 2026, with the careful examination of the diamond core samples. This methodical approach ensures that no aspect of the mineralization is overlooked. The two-stage process allows for both broad analysis and detailed investigation, providing a comprehensive understanding of the manganese deposits.

Looking Ahead to Mid-2027

The metallurgical study is expected to be completed by mid-2027, at which point Accelerate Resources will have a much clearer picture of its manganese deposits. This information will be crucial as the company moves forward with its exploration and development plans. The partnership with CSIRO represents a significant investment in scientific understanding, one that could pay substantial dividends in the years to come as the global demand for manganese continues to grow.
