On 25 November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Noida International Airport at Jewar. This ceremony marked the official start of construction on what was described as a major infrastructure project for Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi‑NCR region.
The first phase of the airport was inaugurated on 28 March 2026 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inauguration marked the ceremonial opening of Phase I.
On 9 October 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, officially approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport in Jewar to ‘Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida‑Jewar’. The decision was framed as a tribute to Modi’s 25‑year tenure in public office.
The development follows a public‑private partnership model, with Zurich Airport International AG named as the private partner.
The airport is designed to handle 1.2 crore passengers annually in its initial phase. Future expansion plans aim to increase capacity to 7 crore passengers per year. The facility features a runway that is 3,900 metres long and is equipped with modern navigation systems. According to the project details, the airport is expected to accommodate 48 aircraft movements each day.
Phase I of the project was built at an investment of about 11,200 crore rupees. The development follows a public‑private partnership model, with Zurich Airport International AG named as the private partner. This investment is described as a significant commitment to regional connectivity.
Beyond the initial capacity of 1.2 crore passengers, the airport’s master plan includes expansion to support up to 7 crore passengers annually. This growth trajectory is intended to position the airport as the country’s largest aviation hub in the years ahead.
The cabinet’s resolution explicitly links the renaming to Modi’s 25‑year journey in public service. By naming the airport after the prime minister, the state government seeks to honour his 25‑year tenure in public office.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath commented on the decision, saying: "The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet is grateful to the Prime Minister for gifting the state the Noida International Airport at Jewar, which will be the largest airport in Uttar Pradesh and is set to become the country's largest aviation hub in the future."
