A New Speed Record

On October 24, 2026, Ukraine's Starlink and Starshield satellite communication systems achieved a new speed record, operating at speeds over 400 km/h. This milestone, a significant improvement from their previous limit of 161 km/h, marks a critical turning point in the country's military communications capabilities. According to Ukraine's Defense Minister, Yevheniy Khmara, the monitoring systems recorded these high speeds, with a stable connection, indicating a return to normal service.

Direct Dialogue and Persistent Stance

The restoration of Starlink and Starshield to these high speeds is attributed to direct dialogue between Ukraine and the United States, as well as the President's persistent stance. President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal about the need for a reliable satellite network, and his efforts have paid off. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry credits this improvement to these efforts, highlighting the importance of the satellite systems for military operations, drone communications, and logistics.

So it turns out that Ukraine's issues with Starlink were caused by Ukraine. Starlink terminals disconnected at speeds above 160 KPH, as determined by the Starlink terminals internal GPS. To get around this, Ukraine hacked the Starlink terminals to think they were stationary regardless of speed. SpaceX figured this out, and updated the system software to detect excessive speed by seeing how rapidly the terminal switched from on satellite to another. This broke Ukraine's hack, and Starlink would no longer work at high speeds. Ukraine was using Starlink in a way that violated the terms of service. Starlink figured it out and stopped it.

The Speed of War

The speed of the satellite network is not just a technical achievement; it is a matter of national security. Ukraine relies on SpaceX's civilian Starlink satellite network and its military-grade Starshield system to support critical military communications and operations. The ability to communicate quickly and effectively is crucial in a conflict where Russian drones pose a significant threat. The restoration of Starlink and Starshield to high speeds is seen as a positive outcome, despite ongoing tensions with the United States over the reliability of the satellite network.

Khmara stated, 'We are recording speeds of over 400 km/h; the connection is stable.

U.S. Official Attention

The U.S. government has taken notice of this development. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal has opened a probe into the Starlink disruption, raising questions about the reliability of the satellite network. The issue has drawn the attention of President Donald J. Trump, who has been closely following the situation. These U.S. officials are investigating the matter to ensure that the satellite network meets the needs of Ukraine's military operations.

Evhenii Khmara's Statement

On October 24, 2026, Evhenii Khmara, Ukraine's Defense Minister, reported that monitoring systems had recorded Starlink/Starshield performance at speeds exceeding 400 km/h with a stable connection. Khmara stated, 'We are recording speeds of over 400 km/h; the connection is stable.' This statement underscores the importance of the satellite network for military operations, drones, and logistics. Khmara emphasized that the restoration is above all important for the front, for soldiers, for the operation of drones, for logistics, and for communications.

The Tension and the Future

While the restoration of Starlink and Starshield to high speeds is a positive development, it has not resolved the underlying tensions between Ukraine and the United States. The issue of the satellite network's reliability has drawn attention from U.S. officials, who are investigating the matter. The U.S. government's involvement highlights the critical nature of the satellite network for Ukraine's military operations and the broader implications for the conflict.

Conclusion

The restoration of Starlink and Starshield to speeds over 400 km/h is a significant milestone for Ukraine's military communications capabilities. This achievement, credited to direct dialogue and the President's persistent stance, has drawn attention from U.S. officials and is crucial for military operations and logistics. While the issue of the satellite network's reliability remains a point of tension, the high-speed restoration is a positive step forward in the ongoing conflict.
