In the coal-rich region of Zonguldak, Turkey, a routine workday turned into a nightmare. An explosion occurred at a mine in Gelik, a location known for its coal extraction operations. The blast impacted the underground facility, leaving workers injured or dead.

The scale of the disaster became clear as authorities assessed the situation. There were 8 workers in the mine at the time of the explosion. Two workers lost their lives in the blast, while 5 others sustained injuries.
Emergency response teams were dispatched to the mine site immediately after the explosion was reported. Working in the area, rescue crews managed to bring 7 workers to the surface.

For the workers with the most critical injuries, time was of the essence. Recognizing the severity of their conditions, medical teams made the decision to transport them to Ankara, where specialized facilities and advanced medical care were available. This transfer represented a crucial step in their treatment.
Osman Hacıbektaşoğlu, an official involved in the response, provided the first official accounting of the tragedy. "Ocakta toplam 8 kişi olduğu belirlendi. 2 can kaybımız, 5 yaralımız var. 1 işçinin ise madende olduğu belirlendi. Durumu ağır olan yaralılar Ankara'ya sevk edilicek," he stated. This translated to: "It has been determined that there were 8 people in the mine. We have 2 fatalities and 5 injured. It was determined that 1 worker is still in the mine. The severely injured will be referred to Ankara."
Even as rescue operations continued, a detail emerged regarding the status of those on site. While 7 workers were rescued, the status of one worker remained a focus as operations continued.
