A severe drought, caused by a weak monsoon, has left Maharashtra's 10 most affected districts parched. The crisis has forced the state to mobilise an unprecedented response.

At the core of Maharashtra’s emergency relief is a fleet of 611 water tankers. These vehicles are spread across 517 villages and over 2,000 hamlets, supplying water to those communities. The fleet is split into 596 privately operated tankers and 15 run directly by the state. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division bears the brunt of the crisis, recording the highest number of tankers in service.

Strengthening Drought Relief and Water Security Across Maharashtra! Chaired a meeting with the central team visiting the state to assess the drought situation. Maharashtra is facing an exceptionally challenging drought situation this year. Our priority is to stand firmly with farmers, farm labourers and rural communities with focused measures to generate employment, ensure food security, provide drinking water and meet the needs of livestock. Three central teams visited drought-affected villages across multiple districts in the state. The teams assessed agricultural conditions and water availability on the ground, while interacting directly with farmers to understand their concerns and immediate requirements. A prolonged dry spell has severely damaged crops, particularly soybean, cotton, tur and sugarcane, putting the livelihoods of farmers and farm labourers at risk. The Maharashtra Government stands firmly with every farmer and will ensure timely assistance through employment and food security schemes, so that affected farmers and rural families receive the help they need. A transparent, technology-driven tanker supply system is being planned, with available water reserved for drinking purposes and separate allocations for citizens and livestock. Desilting and rejuvenation of water bodies, along with strengthened fodder production, procurement and storage, and fodder and cattle camps, will help mitigate the crisis while generating rural employment. Maharashtra Government is actively engaging with the Government of India on this crisis. Hon Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amitbhai Shah has assured expedited assistance so that farmers are able to avail relief measures at the earliest. Minister Girishbhau Mahajan, Minister Dattatray Bharane, Minister Makrand Jadhav-Patil and senior officials were present. @AmitShah @girishdmahajan @bharanemamaNCP @makrandpatil99 #Maharashtra #Mumbai #Drought
The drought has affected livelihoods across the state. The central team’s assessment is ongoing, and relief continues via the tanker network.

The central team’s field visit began on 2026-10-09, and the assessment is ongoing. The state government maintains a neutral stance. Critics such as Prabhakar Shinde have raised concerns. The controversy over water use in Mumbai and the crackdown in Beed remain points of discussion as the drought persists.
