On October 25, 2026, the Archdiocese of New York agreed to an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 survivors of clergy sexual abuse, marking one of the largest payouts in such cases in the United States. The agreement includes the release of internal Church documents identifying known sexual offenders, and grants survivors the right to pursue additional compensation from the Archdiocese's insurers. Survivors' counsel Jeff Anderson hailed the deal as a meaningful step toward accountability, stating that through their courage, sacrifice and determination, survivors have helped bring about a reckoning. Ronald Hicks, speaking for victim-survivors, said they are on the verge of bringing some measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors. The settlement ranks as the second-largest involving a U.S. Catholic archdiocese, after the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' $880 million agreement in 2024. This resolution ends years of legal proceedings and provides a pathway for survivors to seek further redress through insurance litigation.
