Following an announcement from the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), an unprecedented reduction in the maximum retail prices (MRPs) of 543 anti-cancer drug brands was set to take effect on November 9. For patients who have long struggled with the financial burden of cancer treatment, the news represents significant relief.

The most striking example of the new pricing scheme is the dramatic fall in the cost of Anastrozole. Previously priced at 695.76 rupees for a 10-tablet pack, the MRP now sits at 73 rupees. Azacitidine, a chemotherapy agent, has seen its price cut from 6,337 rupees to 1,495.04 rupees. In some cases, prices have fallen by as much as 80%.
The NPPA’s list covers 73% of the 543 drugs, leaving a minority of expensive patented medicines unaffected. The policy is a targeted effort to ease the cost of commonly prescribed oncology drugs.
Its latest directive showcases the authority’s capacity to intervene decisively in the pharmaceutical market.

The central government’s decision was framed as a relief measure for patients. By lowering the MRPs, the government aims to reduce out-of-pocket expenses. The Department of Pharmaceuticals, in its statement, emphasized that the price list would be “continuously updated” to reflect market changes and ensure sustained affordability.
The NPPA is tasked with regulating drug prices. Its latest directive showcases the authority’s capacity to intervene decisively in the pharmaceutical market. The agency’s action aligns with a broader trend of price rationalization in India, where trade margins have been a point of contention.

While the government and patients support the move, the trade margin rationalization policy has faced criticism. Pharmaceutical companies such as RPG Life Sciences, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and Abbott Healthcare are among those associated with the drugs seeing price reductions. Furthermore, the policy has faced scrutiny, with some stakeholders maintaining a critical stance toward the government's approach.
The NPPA has signaled that the price list will be updated regularly. The ongoing dialogue between regulators and the industry will shape the future of drug pricing in India. For now, the 543-brand cut stands as a landmark moment in the country’s effort to make cancer care more affordable.
