A region defined by river and name
Nestled between the Mur River and the Rába Valley, Prekmurje occupies the far‑eastern tip of Slovenia. Covering roughly 938 km² and home to about 78,000 residents, the area’s biggest towns are Murska Sobota and Lendava. The name itself—derived from the Slovene words prek (beyond) and Mura (the river)—literally translates to “area beyond the Mur,” a label that has persisted since the early nineteenth century and was formally revived after 1919 for administrative purposes【k_cfd4944656c95688】.
